GK Libmanan

Simply one of the most beautiful communities I've ever seen, interacted with, been a part of--if even for only one week.



Camarines Sur's Governor LRay Villafuerte funded the creation of two bed & breakfast units, to be turned over to the GK community and used as a livelihood project.


Records of each family that lives within the village, documenting their previous residence.






One night we went into the town to watch the Libmanan's annual talent search contest. "Search for Libmanan's Singing Star & Dance Icon, Season 3" was held in the town's multipurpose recreational hall. It was interesting to witness how much of this local search contest was influenced by the 'talent/reality shows' we see on TV. The use of the term 'season' instead of 'annual' the panel of judges that provide their comments, and of course the announcement of the 'fabulous prizes' including one year management with the local talent agency. Yet another reminder of the politics of American media, and its influence on other cultures. With the passing of Michael Jackson the week before, the event was officially dedicated in memory of MJ with every song and dance routine being a MJ song/choro. One of the GK residents preformed that night, easily one of the best performers of the night.

One of the kids would catch dragonflies in order to feed them to each other. Never knew dragonflies ate each other, the things you learn.








This couple was easily one of the most generous and welcoming families at the site, considering the overall hospitality of the site, that says a lot.


The husband exuded a quite dignity and pride as he would offer to give us haircuts. He previously worked at a aristocrat's barbershop in Naga city, and took pride in being able to give haircuts to many of the international visitors Libmanan frequently received.






After I took this photo, the family asked to see it. Immediately they expressed their delight at the photo.


After seeing how proudly the family displayed the photographs sent back by other international visitors, I realized then how important it would be to share the photos with the residents in each GK village. Before I left the Philippines, I was able to print all 150 photos from my GK experience, and mail them to the GK sites.


There is a quite dignity to every GK house, no matter how simple the interior.










Livelihood projects:
In conversations with the GK advocate, Jose Ma. I. Montelibano, he stated that the Livelihood projects of GK were 'the last objective of the GK project.' He explained that that the GK residencies had been 'living' and 'surviving' long before the GK project reached them, therefore the Livelihood projects were simply the final step in reaching community empowerment. Each livelihood project is essentially a Cooperative business, each project is engaged by several residents of the village and profits shared amongst the village. Libmanan has several livelihood projects including a fish-farm, slipper making, dishwashing liquid making, laundry detergent making, fabric softener making,
